Back to my trip to Pasadena. Augie got a haircut and was very good and sat very still. Afterward he got to ride on the bee. This appears to be quite a big deal.

We also went to visit Walt and the Mouse. Augie refers to this place as Pooh's house. Apparently, Pooh allows Mickey to live here as well. We rode lots of rides such as Dumbo and It's a Small World. This is the first time in a very long time that I have been aboard a Small World boat, as we got stuck in there many years ago. We were stuck between two countries and the dolls were merrily singing in the their own languages and it was sort of head banging. This year the ride was still in it's Christmas mode and most of the dolls were singing in English and it was pretty nice. Lots of color, etc.

Earlier this month I traveled to Pasadena to visit Martha and family. I was greeted by Pooh placed on my pillow and this neat little sign. The bottom photo is Zach and Augie, watching, I'm sure, Thomas the Train. More of this busy trip in times to come.

I met Dave and Kaylene at Bel Square yesterday morning. Kaylene got her haircut and did a good job sitting pretty still and being pretty patient. There were many other little girls there getting their hair cut and she found them very interesting. We think she looks very spiffy! After our haircut there was some play time in the children's play area at the square and then to lunch. Very nice morning for grandma!

Nice photo of Dad putting up the outdoor lights. He is putting them all over a rather large rhoddy we have in our little garden. It's very impressive at night when it is all lit up. It's also rather impressive in the spring when it is in full bloom.

Earlier in the month, I met Dave and Kaylene at Bel Square. We spent about an hour in the play area they have there and then went for lunch. On the way, we found lots of what Kaylene says are "Oh, big pumpkins". They certainly were big and here is an example.

A week or so ago, this feathered fellow appeared on top of a tree outside of our condo. He just sat and looked around for quite a while. Really neat. We have all sorts of wild life around and it's always fun to see some. Then a couple of days ago we were treated with a lovely sunset. Always a treat to view.

Back in mid October Martha, Zach and Augie came for a visit. Martha went to the store and came home with two pumpkins. Dave and family came over for dinner, so they sat down and carved them before we ate. We had a fun evening, complete with building blocks and eating yummy orange frosted cupcakes.

Our son David turned 40 this past October. He thought it would be fun if the family and some friends went to Whidbey Island for a week end to celebrate. His wife found this lovely house on the water which housed all twelve of us. We had a great time walking the beach, eating, resting, eating, playing games, eating, etc. etc. etc. Kaylene especially loved the sand and sea shells. She kept saying more sea shells, while Dalene and I went looking for more for her. We had fires on the patio at night with smores and our meals were delicious. Big breakfasts, great sandwiches for lunch, and tacos with all the fixings on night one and then salmon and flank steak for the birthday dinner on night two. Not to mention red velvet cake for the birthday cake. Was a great way to celebrate his birthday and a good time was had by all. Dad and I just don't know where the last 40 years went!

It's hard to tell how beautiful this scenery really is from the photos. Dave say's you really have to be there to take it all in. This was the second part of his hike across England, he did the first half last year. He did this in early Sept. and didn't have the best of weather, but good enough. The hike was over a 100 miles and he did it in about 9 days.

The first picture is of Augie after his haircut and riding on the bee. He was getting all spiffed up for his birthday party which was to occur the next day. His mom, dad, and grandfather spent a lot of time getting the backyard all ready for his little friends and their parents. We made a bunch of those red and blue poofs out of tissue paper and hung them in trees, decorated tables and just got everything together. Every one had a wonderful time and all the kiddos where just great. For dinner we had salad, and pizza. The pizza was 36 inches round. Dave and I had never seen anything that big and most of the folks there hadn't either. You can get some sort of a sense of what it looked like in the photo. After most went home, the family sat around and watched Augie open some of his gifts. Such a happy little face!

We spent the last of Sept and beginning of Oct in Pasadena with Martha, Zach and Augie. We went for the purpose of celebrating Augie's birthday. More photos on that later. We did a couple of other fun things, one of which was going to Train Town. Augie loves this place. He is really into trains and their are lots of BIG ones to look at, as well as the one to ride. Much joy as you can see. The other thing was going to Santa Monica beach for breakfast. What a beautiful place. The beach is very wide, the water blue and as you can see, the sand is fun! We sat and talked after we ate, while Augie just sat and played in the sand. Place is really kid friendly and the food was great!

Trip to Orofino, Idaho

A couple of weeks ago, we took a trip to Orofino, Idaho. Jolene and Dalene's Dad's family has a reunion about every 3 or 4 years. They have some property way up a montain side from Orofino. They have a very large family and it's fun to see them all together. At this point there are about 3 generations of folks all talking, laughing and eating together. As you can see Kaylene had the time of her life, getting very dirty and playing with a couple of people just her size. Getting to Orofino takes about 7 hrs. from Seattle. The trip takes you through some beautiful areas of Eastern Washington and of course much of Idaho is lovely. This is our second trip, we stay at a motel called the Konkolville motel, which is very nice. Very reasonable, very clean and they have a great pool. It also includes breakfast. Such a deal, huh!?!

Our very good friends got married this past August and we were all invited. Martha and Augie even flew up from California. The wedding party looks so young. I think it's because they are. It was a lovely occassion. The bottom two photos are of Augie trying to eat dirt and Kaylene playing in the dirt in her lovely pastel dress. Go figure! Needless to say a good time was had by all!

Our friends from Santa Barbara stopped for a quick visit on their way to Canada. They will be living there for a while and tho' it isn't far we will miss them. Here they are settling in and doing some Facetime with Muf and Augie. It was really fun to have them and were sorry to see them go. We did a lot of rehashing the fun times we all had in Santa Barbara. God speed, Hui's, and don't be surprised if we suddenly decide to drive up for a visit!

The summit is at 13,796 ft. The sunsets are spectacular. It is hard to explain it or even take pictures that show the incredible beauty. There are several large telescopes up there and when they move it's sort of frightening. On the way down you stop for cookies and hot chocolate, they set up a telescope and you view the night sky, while the docent tells you what to look for. Planets, stars, constellations, so clear in the very black night sky. Saw several satellites as well.

One of the highlights of our trip was a tour we took to the Mauna Kea summit to watch the sunset. You start out at about 3 in the afternoon and get back around midnight. You get about half way up and you stop for a dinner of stew and corn muffins. The place where you stop is a group of very old buildings put there by the Parker Ranch. They believe that Robert Lewis Stevenson stayed here before he made his ascent of the mountain. It was chilly up there and the stew was warming and delicious.

Hawaii

As many of you know, we spent the last week of June on the big island of Hawaii on the Kona coast. There were eleven of us. Dave and I, with our son and daughter in law and their daughter, our daughter and son in law and their son, our daughter in laws parents and sister. We had a wonderful time. The above photos are of some of the incredible scenery which seems to abound there and a statue of King Kamehameha. Three of us took a little trip up around the top of the island and took these photos and many more.

Dave and his friend Norm, took a trip, several weeks back, to So. Utah. They hiked in many of the beautiful areas that are located there. I've always thought, they should just name of all of So. Utah at National Park. There is so much to see and marvel at, you can't possibly see it all in a lifetime. Anyway here are some photos. On the way they stopped at Twin Falls, Idaho. The first two pics are of the falls. I would like to go to Twin Falls just to see these. Impressive, I think.

Back in March my brother and his wife came to the west coast for a short visit. The main purpose of the trip was to see our grandchildren. They were here for about 3 days and then went to Pasadena to visit the kids that live there. We had a couple of great visits with Kaylene and her parents, but we also visited the Capitol building in Olympia. Took a tour and found it very interesting. The chandelier that hangs from the dome is big enough to hold a VW bug. It is also very secure. Standing right under it is supposedly the safest place to be in the building, during a earthquake. There are a couple of docents there who aren't too sure. =) After our little tour we went to the Bremerton ferrry dock and took the boat across. The weather wasn't too great, but UB took photos anyway. After our day of touring around we went to Dave and Jolene's for dinner. Nice time, I wish they could have stayed longer. However Pasadena and Augie were calling and after all the reason for the trip was "the kids".

I know it's been a while since I've posted, but life has been pretty busy and I just haven't found the time. Costa Rica was our last stop on the Panama Canal cruise. It's very hard to show just how lovely this little river trip was. You really must experience it yourself. Lots of birds and a few animals, hard to photograph. It was just very serene.

The whole reason for this trip, was to experience the Panama canal and traverse the locks. I remember as a young person reading about the canal and thinking "I'd like to see that". So here we are. It was worth the whole trip. It takes quite a while to go through. You get up at 5:30am to get a good spot to watch and it's sort of like a fairy tale. It's dark and the locks and the ships going through are all lit up. They have coffee and rolls for you and the whole atmosphere is party like. I don't remember the actual amount of time it took to go through, but it is hours.

On the next two days of our cruise we visited Aruba and Bonaire. The buildings are all painted pastel colors. Not much was open the days we were there, as they were celebrating Carnival. The bars and casinos were open, as were the gift shops. The towns just shut down for about 4 days and they party. They have incredible parades. I couldn't stand around for all the festivities, as it was really hot. When I got back to the ship, my back was soaking wet. Don't think I've ever perspired like that!

Dress A Girl Around The World

I'm going to interrupt the cruise photos for a minute and tell you about an organization that I recently got involved with. Dress a Girl Around the World includes women from all over the US and a couple of foreign countries, who get together and make dresses for girls who have very little, in mostly 3rd world countries. Some of them have never had a dress. The dresses are made pretty much from pillow cases. They add ruffles and trim and turn out some lovely dresses. They also use fabric and when they do they start out with a tube of fabric, just like a pillow case and go from there. Most of the fabric and trims are donated by women who have remnants stashed away, from other projects, that they didn't want to throw away or they have pillow cases they are not using and the fabric is still is good shape. They have a web site they explains all this in more detail. It is http://dressagirlaroundtheworld.com Some folks are very creative. I'm not much of a seamstress, but I go, cut things out, press things and collect fabrics, etc. from my friends. I've collected 5 grocery bags of fabrics, buttons, thread and trims, just by mentioning it to my fellow swimmers at water aerobics. It's a very nice project.

Our first stop was an island that is owned by the cruise company. It was a day for the beach. We sat on chairs and watched the world go by. You'll notice that Norm was showing us the way back to Seattle. None of us wanted to go! In the afternoon they had a big Bar B Q for us. Very tasty, the fruit is always amazing. The sand on this beach was incredible. Very white and very soft. Nice start to the trip.

On March 1st we flew to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where we spent two nights before departing on our Panama Canal cruise. We spent a day just wandering around the city. We took a little cruise on some of the inland waterways in the city. This is one of the oldest homes in Ft.
Lauderdale. They take you past many "large" yachts and many lovely homes. The homes are owned by lots of famous people, as are the yachts. Soooo much money represented here.

Dave and Kaylene stopped by for a surprise visit yesterday. It seems their Community Center was closed for the day, so they decided to visit us and our community of ducks. There are all kinds of ducks down at our pond and are fun to watch. However, yesterday they seemed to be cranky and territorial. Me thinks there are ducklings in our future soon. It is spring you know!

When we visit Pasadena, we almost always go to some fun restaurants. Lots of folks have been to a Cheesecake Factory, the home of big food. Was very tasty. One evening we went to a spot not too far from where they live called the LaGrande Orange. It's housed in an old train station and the food is very good. Nice times.

Santa Anita Racetrack

Oops, I got one picture in twice! Oh well! While we were visiting the kids, they took us to the racetrack. When the horses are not racing, they exercise them early in the morning. You can sit and watch this go on, while having breakfast track side. I'm not sure why this is such a neat thing to do, but it is. We got there about 7:30 am. You sit outside under heat lamps, as it is pretty cool, but everything is so fascinating to watch, you forget about the cold. You can get pretty close to the horses as they gallop by. Such fun! Seabiscuit was kept here, and they have a thing called the Seabiscuit tour, which started much later in the day, so we didn't partake. Next time!

We rarely have a photo of us taken together. It seems that one of us is always taking the photo. Anyway, every year, Hertz has a pot luck Christmas party for the transporters. I wish I could say that I have a lot of photos from the holidays, but I don't. We had a pretty hectic time, in that, we lost all power on Christmas eve, then realized the oven wasn't working. We all managed to get sick with something or other, mine turned out to be pneumonia. There were other miscellaneous mishaps, not worth going into, but added to the confusion. All that to say, we are very thankful for our family, and these two little people God has so graciously brought into our lives. Anyway, here are a few photos I'm finding fun to share. After the visit to the Olympic Hotel, we visited the lobby of the Sheraton Hotel to see the annual Gingerbread house display. Every year architects and bakers in the Seattle area get together and create these Gingerbread extravaganzas. They always have a theme. One year it was NYC, so there was a Brooklyn bridge, a Statue of Liberty, a Empire State bldg. etc. etc. Another year it was Superheros. So you saw Superman, Spiderman, etc. This year the theme was home away from home. The two here are a houseboat and a spectacular tree house. This is also free. They ask for a donation for Juvenile Diabetes. Candy canes are given out here as well.

Then to Pacific Place to watch it snow. It snows inside the mall every evening at 6pm. It's hard to tell from the photo, but the kids are lovin' it! We do too.

Our annual trip downtown for Christmas

Every year we go downtown to take in the Christmas lights and festivities. We took the bus into the city and started with the Olympic Hotel's Teddy Bear suite. We've heard about this for years and finally decided to take a look. It's a suite all decorated for Christmas and just full of Teddy Bears, all shapes and sizes. There are couchs, beds, chairs and the floor where you can sit with your child and read stories about bears. The books are put there by the Seattle public library, admission is free, but they ask for a donation. I believe the money goes to Children's Hospital. You even get a candy cane when you leave. The lobby at the Olympic is always very lovely. Many trees, all for sale and the proceeds go to a variety of different causes.
